I work with men who want to heal from their compulsive behaviors.
This might involve pornography, compulsive internet use, or compulsive eating. I’m especially interested in working with men who have tried a lot—perhaps therapy, 12-step groups, or other approaches—and keep finding themselves back at the same place.
About the sessions
How I work
I teach and guide a practice called Focusing. It offers a different way to work with the feelings and urges that you’ve been struggling with.
When something in you wants to do the thing you’re trying to stop, turning toward it can seem like the last thing you should do. But that is part of what we learn: how to be with what’s happening inside without fighting it or having to act on it.
This takes more than deciding to be kind to yourself. Focusing is a specific skill. I help you sense how a difficulty feels in your body, find words for what you’re experiencing, and stay with what isn’t clear yet. You don’t have to know how to do this before we begin.
What comes is nearly always surprising. An urge or feeling you’ve only wanted to escape may begin to make sense in a way it hasn’t before. There can be relief, deep emotional healing, and new possibilities for how you respond.
I’ve practiced Focusing since 2009. My role is to help you learn this way of working with yourself and bring it to the places where you keep getting stuck. We work with what you’re actually experiencing, without requiring you to feel differently or reach a particular outcome.

Working together
We meet online for 55 minutes. You can bring a difficulty you want to work with, even if you don’t know how to explain it. I offer guidance, and we go at a pace that feels right for you.
The first session is free. It gives us time to meet, try Focusing together, and see whether you’d like to continue.
To arrange a first session, email ryanharbert.focusing@proton.me, or call or text 559 549 4991.
